Soil: The Nexus Of All Life On Earth

Soil— It is that from which these bodies we inhabit came and to which they will one day return. It is the living matrix from which all the things you hold dear became manifest and to which all organic matter will return. Soil is the epidermis of the living planet, and the medium through which all the nutrient and mineral constituents that make up your body (and the physical body of all other living beings/plants) came from. There would be no life without it, it is the cellular, molecular and atomic ‘economy’ that allows for the manufacturing of complex macroscopic beings to become manifest (such as us). This biological economy (that trades in the raw materials that are essential for all life) is the engine of the ecosystems we as humans depend upon to survive.

Soil is comprised of much more than simple minerals, clay, humus and silt, it is also defined by the community of diverse soil dwelling life forms (without that life, it is just dirt). Soil life forms each carry out important tasks that allow for the bridging between the raw materials left behind from the death process and the transformation of that organic matter into the building blocks required for new life to spring forth during the birthing (or germinating process). These soil dwelling organisms even have the capability of prying loose atoms from rock using mild organic acids allowing for the transformation of rock into water soluble nutrients that plants can use as food. This community is comprised of bacterium, fungi and myriad other micro-scopic and macro-scopic beings.

When we choose to feed and build the soil through composting, mulching and encouraging a diverse soil ecosystem we are strengthening the substrate that will enable not only ourselves to have access to healthy, diverse and resilient food crops… but also ensuring that future generations will be able to access those same blessings. It is for these reasons and many more that I believe the best investment on earth, Is Earth. Investing in the earth means planting seeds, building soil and learning from the plants, animals (and other beings) with whom we share our ecosystem. As we learn to perpetuate the cycle and create a rhythm of reciprocity, we become a powerful force for positive change and healing on planet Earth.
